The skin has a slightly acidic film mantle on the surface, acting as a barrier to bacteria, free radicals and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin. The pH of the skin is between 4.5 and acidic and 6.2 alkaline. Anything under 7 is acidic and anything over is alkaline. The skin and acid mantle plays an important part in desquamation, (shedding of skin cells). The more balanced the pH, the better the skin is at shedding old skin cells.
